Share first single, Criminal Against Nature
(September 8) – Toronto’s Lammping is a project built on the idea that music can exist across timelines. Founded by Mikhail Galkin and Jay Anderson, the band’s sound draws equally from heavy psych rock, hip-hop, classic songwriting, and experimental collage, creating records that feel both familiar and impossible to place within a single era or genre.
Their latest album, So What, What?, is the clearest expression of that approach. Built from fragments of memory, influence, and lived experience, the record moves seamlessly between sampled textures, personal storytelling, and adventurous songwriting. References to everything from Soviet-era recordings to golden-age hip-hop sit alongside reflections on family, parenthood, and the uncertainty of the present moment. Yet despite its wide-ranging influences, the album remains firmly rooted in songcraft rather than nostalgia. The first single, ‘Criminal Against Nature ’, is out today.
Galkin’s musical journey began in the world of sampling as DJ Alibi, where he developed the collage-like sensibility that would later become central to Lammping’s identity. Anderson, meanwhile, is one of Toronto’s most respected and versatile drummers, with more than two decades performing across some of the city’s most acclaimed independent music projects, including Biblical, Badge Époque Ensemble, and Roy. He is also the driving force behind UWUW, an ambitious collaborative project with Ian Blurton of Future Now and a rotating cast of celebrated Canadian musicians.
Guided by a shared love of hip-hop, 1960s and 1970s songwriting, DIY culture, and the music that shaped them as ’90s kids, Galkin and Anderson have spent the last 6 years following their curiosity wherever it leads. Along the way, Lammping has released psych-rock records, collaborated with jazz-funk collective Badge Époque Ensemble, worked with rappers Boldy James and O.C., recorded with Bloodshot Bill, and explored yacht-rock territory alongside Marker Starling. Today, melodies, memories, emotions, and influences are treated as source material, woven together into songs that feel simultaneously personal and expansive.
So What, What? brings that philosophy into full focus. It is a record that embraces every corner of Lammping’s musical identity, presenting a rich, kaleidoscopic body of work that looks backward, forward, and somewhere entirely its own.
